Brakes & Brake Servicing FAQs

  • At Les Schwab, we don’t just pull the calipers off, replace the brake pads, and reinstall the unit. When we conduct a full inspection (an inspection that involves more than a free visual inspection), we measure your brake pads in millimeters to ensure accuracy. Additionally, we examine the rotor for grooves or uneven wear. These can indicate the need for a replacement or resurfacing. We then measure your rotor thickness with a micrometer to ensure it is well above the minimum for your vehicle. All of that information is shared with you, along with our recommendations and a clear cost estimate.

  • Brakes and your brake parts don’t have a set lifespan. They can wear out after 18,000 miles or last up to 60,000 miles. It all depends on how and what you drive. To ensure your brakes work when you need them, brake services at Les Schwab include new brake pads, flushing of old brake fluid, adding new fluid, and adjusting the other braking components. We resurface or replace the rotors every time and recommend remanufactured or new calipers whenever available.

  • Every inspection includes pad and rotor measurements, along with recommended brake repairs and replacements. The estimate also covers the costs for all parts and labor to get the job done right. Before any work is done, we wait for your approval. If we find anything unexpected during the repair or service, our professionals will talk with you before moving forward to ensure there are no surprises.

  • The cost to replace and repair brakes depends on the size and type of vehicle as well as the type of brakes involved. We realize there are other places that do brakes. We urge you to compare brake estimates before having any work done.

  • When you book an appointment with Les Schwab for your brake services, we’ll provide you with an estimated timeframe and do our best to get you back on the road in hours, not days. However, if the parts for your vehicle are not available, your brake service may need to be moved to another time or day. Our professionals will be open about time expectations, keeping in contact with you in person or over the phone.

  • If a failure in workmanship or materials occurs within 25,000 miles or 36 months (whichever comes first) from the date of your original brake service, come to any Les Schwab location. That warranty means we will replace the defective parts and perform the labor to install them at no cost.

  • Some noises from your brakes are normal for up to 1,000 miles after a repair or replacement. These sounds can include some light grinding or squealing. However, any noises that persist after the break-in period should be evaluated by a professional at Les Schwab.

  • When you come to Les Schwab for a free visual inspection of your brakes and fluid reservoir on most vehicles, you really are getting a free service. If your brakes look fine, we’ll send you on your way. And it won’t cost you a thing. We’ll even provide a printed report. If we do find something that needs more attention, we’ll chat with you first before doing any work.

  • Some shops advertise special low-price brake services, but that work usually only covers the brake pad replacement. If you need to replace the rotors or calipers, the costs can skyrocket. Because a full inspection beyond our free visual inspection is required for a detailed cost estimate, we do not do price matching. However, we will always do our best to help keep you safe on the road.

  • Whether you wait in a Les Schwab Tires lobby or you drop off your vehicle and give us your phone number, our professionals will keep in touch during your brake service. We’ll call with any questions, let you know if there are any delays, and let you know when your vehicle is ready.
